___________________________
We originally heard "The Story of Job" on a CD of The Golden Gate Quartet, a group from the '30s and we were blown away by the rhythm those guys created just singing acappella. We adapted this song to fit us and it became the song we used to win a national talent competition back in 1997. Since Will Labrenz was with us during the competition and he'd brought the song to the group, it was appropriate to have him come into the studio to record the lead vocal. The unique sound of the song and Will's solid vocal makes "Job" my favorite song on The Hand of Mercy. - Phillip

You know Job, he was the richest man that lived in the land of Nod
He was the only man from miles around that kept the commandments of God
Well, the devil he got jealous of Job and he came to God one day
Said, "If You move Your hand from around the man
he gonna curse you to your face."
(First Chorus)
He said "There's nothin' you can do to turn him around
There's nothin' you can do, Lord, to turn him around
Because he done signed up, made up his mind
He's on his way, Lord, Lord, he's on his way
And then the devil laid his fingers on Job and Job felt downright weak
And he lay down in the bed and believe me, children,
he was sore from his head to his feet
Ol' Job's friends come a'runnin' to him, and they numbered from one to five
They said, "Job he's sick, and he won't get well, I believe he's a-gonna die"
(Second Chorus)
He said, "I'm on my way,
to the kingdom land
I'm on my way,
Lord to the kingdom land
And if you don't go
I'll journey on"
Lord, Lord he's on his way
And then his wife come a-truckin' to him with the devil right in her eyes
She said, "Fool, you're sick, and you won't get well,
you might as well curse your God and die"
Job, looked straight right at the woman, said "I ain't got nothin' to say,
Because the Lord God in heaven giveth and the Lord God taketh away."
(Repeat Second Chorus)
(Repeat First Chorus)
He's on his way
Lord, Lord he's on his way
