(II Kings 13:20, 21)
Several years ago I committed myself to reading through the entire Bible. As I read, I came across the passage in II Kings 13:20, 21, and stopped in my
tracks. Here was the shortest “story” in Scripture and it was one of the most
powerful. Elisha’s request to have a “double portion” of Elijah’s spirit was granted by God in such an incredible way that even in his death, Elisha’s dusty bones performed a resurrection miracle through the Holy Spirit.

As I wrote the lyrics to this song, I realized that the Bible shows us that God is truly with us (Emmanuel) and that he uses His Spirit to guide us just as He did for the prophets in ages past.

Well, a long time ago in Israel land
When the prophet Elisha died
Those Moabite men came a-ridin’ in
Just to raid the countryside
They came around every spring just to see what they could get
And though some thought God had left the land,
He wasn’t quite finished yet…

Now there’s a funeral band spread across the sand
and the air is hot and still
And while the Israelites cried, one of them spied those raiders
comin’ over the hill
Well they looked around for a place to hide their dearly departed friend
And when all they found was Elisha’s tomb, they took him and they threw him in

Well they threw that man and he happened to land
in the middle of the prophet’s bones
And all the people outside went runnin’ to hide
Behind the bushes and the trees and stones
Now when the danger was gone, it didn’t take them long
to find out their friend was alive
And I’m sure those men who threw him in couldn’t believe their eyes

Now that dead man touched Elisha’s bones and he came to life again
That same Holy Spirit is here today just like it was back then
When you feel just like you’re dead inside and everybody’s left you alone
Just remember the man who came to life again in “The Ballad of Elisha’s Bones”

(Chorus)
I said rise up and live again, rise up, be whole again
The power of God has given you new life so you must rise
Get up and walk again, get up, be free again
The Lord has given you a second chance, so come on out of that tomb

I said your foot bone connected to your ankle bone
Your ankle bone connected to your leg bone
Your leg bone connected to your knee bone
So come on out of that tomb

(Repeat Chorus and End)
